Disabling Error Reporting

Sorry for infrequent posts, but my exams are nearing and I can't help it.

Nevertheless, here is a simple trick which my friend told me about:

The error report sending message is quite annoying as it continuously pops up.

Here is a simple way to get it out of way:

1. Go to Start -> Control panel.

2. Go to system.

3. Go to the Advanced tab.

4. Under the Advanced tab, at the bottom click on ‘Error reporting’.

Now click on ‘Disable error reporting’.

Thats all for today.

Quantum Computers, an another step.

Physicists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have overcome a hurdle in quantum computer development, having devised a viable way to manipulate a single “bit” in a quantum processor without disturbing the information stored in its neighbours. The approach, which makes novel use of polarized light to create “effective” magnetic fields, could bring the long-sought computers a step closer to reality.

A great challenge in creating a working quantum computer is maintaining control over the carriers of information, the “switches” in a quantum processor while isolating them from the environment. These quantum bits, or “qubits,” have the uncanny ability to exist in both “on” and “off” positions simultaneously, giving quantum computers the power to solve problems conventional computers find intractable — such as breaking complex cryptographic codes.
One approach to quantum computer development aims to use a single isolated rubidium atom as a qubit. Each such rubidium atom can take on any of eight different energy states, so the design goal is to choose two of these energy states to represent the on and off positions.
Ideally, these two states should be completely insensitive to stray magnetic fields that can destroy the qubit’s ability to be simultaneously on and off, ruining calculations. However, choosing such “field-insensitive” states also makes the qubits less sensitive to those magnetic fields used intentionally to select and manipulate them.

To solve this problem, the NIST team used two pairs of energy states within the same atom. Each pair is best suited to a different task: One pair is used as a ‘memory’ qubit for storing information, while the second ‘working’ pair comprises a qubit to be used for computation. While each pair of states is field-insensitive, transitions between the memory and working states are sensitive, and amenable to field control. When a memory qubit needs to perform a computation, a magnetic field can make it change hats. And it can do this without disturbing nearby memory qubits.

The NIST team demonstrated this approach in an array of atoms grouped into pairs, using the technique to address one member of each pair individually. Grouping the atoms into pairs, Lundblad says, allows the team to simplify the problem from selecting one qubit out of many to selecting one out of two — which can be done by creating an effective magnetic field with a beam of polarized light.

The polarized-light technique, which the NIST team developed, can be extended to select specific qubits out of a large groupwithout affecting those nearby. Their work was published in Nature Physics and appreciated by the readers. It is considered as a big step in this new generation of computers.

Avast!

The use of computers and web has increased and it has really benefited us. Nevertheless, not all have been good and a threat called “VIRUS” haunts the dreams of every computer user.

Just last night, my cousin called me, seeking my help. Some virus had infected his computer and corrupted the OS! All his projects, games, music files, videos, etc. were lost in one go. Luckily, I had a copy of his projects and he was somehow saved…

Many of us have experienced similar issues despite having renowned [read PAID] antiviruses. I simply love my Avast Antivirus. Its interface is simple and its quite effective in dealing with the viruses.

It has been awarded the "Advanced" rating in the latest round of testing by AV-Comparatives and voted "Best Bet" by PCWorld magazine.

Here is a bit of information that might be useful for people who are in dilemma over the choice of an anti-virus.

Advantages of Avast Anti-Virus:

  • Its updates are very small (of KBs) and so it can be easily updated even with a dial-up connection
  • Its home edition is totally free. When your registration key expires, simply re-register!
  • It consumes less system resources.
  • It doesn’t slow down the system.
  • It provides many free services Real Time Protection Access, Webshield, P2P shield, etc.
  • It usually does not raise false alarms like many other antiviruses.
  • It doesn’t interfere with the system files.
  • The interface is user-friendly.
  • You can customize it through cool-themes or you can build your own theme.

Disadvantages of Avast Anti-Virus:

  • The Home-Edition doesn’t have Enhanced User Interface, Script-Blocker, Command Line Scanner, etc.

Watching Flagged/Restricted YouTube Videos

In many countries, the governments have banned YouTube giving some damned stupid reasons.
They are mostly banned to avoid disputes arising out of some inappropriate content of the video or due to problem of distribution rights. If you try to access such videos, you will find the following notice - “This video is not available in your country” or something alike.

But there is no need to worry! Here is a little trick to get access to these sort of videos . The trick doesn’t require any software or tools!

Suppose a video is located at - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Abc (this link is just for example and it doesn’t point to any video).

Now what you need to do is remove “watch?” and replace the “=” symbol with “/”. Now the original video URL will be replaced as -

http://www.youtube.com/v/Abc

This trick also works if you happened to get the following notice for some video -

This video or group may contain content that is inappropriate for some users, as flagged by YouTube’s user community.

By clicking “Confirm”, you are agreeing that all videos or groups flagged by the YouTube community will be viewable by this account.

Ejecting USB Forcefully

While ejecting USB flash drives from PC, sometimes an error comes saying

The device “Generic Volume” cannot be stopped right now, try stopping the device again later.

Here is a free utility called EjectUSB that forcefully stops all the running programs and helps in ejecting pen drives safely.

It is designed to be a simple utility to close all programs running from a specified drive or folder and then attempt ejection if a drive was specified.

Click here to download this software from the official website.

NOTE - I HAVEN'T USED THIS SOFTWARE SO I DON'T KNOW ABOUT ITS EFFECTS!

Enabling Right-Clicking

It would have been a common day for me, had I not been irritated by a certain website[I can’t disclose the name for legal purposes] which flashed a message every time I right-clicked!

It is quite common for webpages to disable right-clicking so that none steal their images, etc. This might be good for the webmasters but not so good for a web-surfer as disabling right-clicking, disables ALL RIGHT-CLICK FEATURES [like open in new window, etc.] & besides anyone can easily steal those images, etc. through simple tricks
[like the one for getting photos in an Orkut album]

It's easy to change, assuming you are using IE:

  • Click "Tools"->"Internet Options"

  • Go to the "Security" tab

  • Select "Custom Level"

  • Scroll down to the "Scripting" section

  • Set "Active Scripting" to "disable"

  • Click "OK”.

When you are done with right-clicking, simply “enable” it.

Is Upgrading Necessary

I use a computer having Windows XP SP (Service Pack) 2 as OS with a Core 2 Duo processor and 1 GB RAM and have been many times criticized by some persons, I know well, as being “stuck up to the oldies…” [ because I use many old versions of softwares, but it does not include my antivirus !]. Many people consider old hardware and/or softwares as a waste and get their hands on the latest updates/upgrades. The choice of the computer platform on which one works is closely related to one’s lifestyle and work. If you are an architect or an avid gamer you would always need a fast CPU and good graphic card like add-ons but if you are a simple student preparing some damned school report (like I do) or a mediocre gamer (again like me!) you can manage well (albeit with some irritation) with 256MB-512MB RAM even!

I know many people would contradict what I’m telling you but it is the truth. It just takes some brains to extract the best from your PC! I tell so because I’ve been, for the past 7 years, working on a computer equipped with mere 128 MB RAM and a Pentium 4 Processor (well its still a very good processor!) first with only Windows 98, then with _98_ and XP Professional, then with XP SP 2. Believe me that my computer has crashed less than many other peoples higher RAM and better processor computers (My computer usually crashed because I… frequently used to play with its settings and registry. Of course, it was an idiotic thing to do and I still do it but don’t ever try it with your PC!). I got it upgraded only when I had done some-to put it mildly-damage to its hard disk through some modifications… (it was totally unintentional and lets draw a curtain of charity over it!). It was then that I got my computer upgraded with the afore-mentioned configuration.

Even after upgrading my computer, my choice of OS has been criticized in favour of Windows Vista. The reason why I chose XP is simple and it is- “XP IS FASTER AND EASIER FOR A COMMON MAN”. Vista does make the PC sluggish.
I’m not criticizing Vista, no not at all. It’s great software with many improvements but many of its features have to be DISCOVERED which isn’t always easy for a common user! I’ve to install anti-virus, firewall, anti-spyware, etc. both in XP as well as in Vista to protect my computer. Of course, Vista has many built-in security features but you’ll always need professional software. The other major problem is with drivers. If you simply install Vista, chances are high that your old hardware won’t function and you have to make them

“VISTA-READY”. The reason why Vista is so large is that it has to be made so that it runs even the old programs (the term is called “BACKWARD COMPABILITY”). I would rather go for LINUX than Vista because many of its features are at par with Vista and there are things, like a software management feature, which Vista lack

Leave Vista and come to other common softwares. This text has been typed in MS-WORD 2003. Why not the latest one? Well, because “Office-2003” is fine for me! I don’t have the latest Adobe Reader 9.1 (again a great software) but and older version and I don’t have any problems as again the software is fine for me. I run the Disk Defragmenter time to time unlike many of my friends because it does help my computer to be a good one. I check my computer’s drives for errors as it again helps my PC. I have many softwares but I don’t use them all. If I can run a file with many softwares, I would go for one or two unlike many people who would install all of them (it usually happens with music files where one installs a number of players that one is never going to use). Many of my friends have upgraded to the new Internet Explorer and are telling how good it is. In response to it, I have an old (and still good) IE besides the latest Opera and Firefox!

The choice of hardware and software and their use depends a lot upon your requirements. If you have XP and don’t plan to change to Vista then why the hell should you be stressed on buying a Ready-Boost supporting flash-drive? If you are a ordinary student, a 160 GB Hard-Disk is very good for you. Upgrading isn’t always the best thing. Before running behind an update just care to think whether you really need it or you are just cluttering your PC with junk!
